I guess I'm a victim of brainwash advertisement. But still this earphone not just looks cool but got great sound, especially on bass area.
So it's me, looking as cool as Lara Croft and Mila Kunis, and enjoying amazing music, anytime, anywhere.

Bored + Cintiq = New Art

I was bored that day at office and start to doodle on my Cintiq [office's Cintiq to be more precise], in the end the concept got pretty interesting so after work hour I moved it into my flashdrive and continued it home with my lovable Intuos. It was getting exciting and took me until 2 o' clock in the morning till I finish this.

And this is the step by step progress. I've used black and white value technique before which is not quite satisfying for me, but this one does better. I start to have grip for this way of creating depth, and it's faster too. With this I can color the picture as a whole composition, not part by part.

Punyu Redesign [Update]

I'm trying to make Punyu design more realistic and less cartoony, not that less cartony just more believable. The previous one is just too 2 dimensional for me. I give her more anatomical body, better proportion, slight boobs pumping, and feet(!). The design is still a work in progress.

Coola things! I just find this movie uploaded by my art director that means this is shareable now.
This is an animation project I've been doing. It's not perfect yet. But enough for a teaser. And still the best visual of domestic animation I've ever seen for now. Glad I could be involved.

CoJ is an ambitious full feature movie project. I am involved as a lead animator. Here I'll be using motion capture animation pipeline, quite an experience, huh?

I'm really sure this project gonna teach me a lot in new animation technique and responsibility as animation leader. And for now, the project is a giant piles of superfuness. The total production, including pre and post production would be done in full 2 years. Wish us luck!

Character Animation Turning Back Tutorial

This is for colleague who asked me how to make character turning back in the fastest and simplest way. I did it in 11 minute, hope that's fast enough. For your watching and learning convenience, I speed up the video into 200% of the real duration.

The concept are first, make the key poses. Don't do the steps yet, just make her facing each potition she needs to make the movement.

Now, to make a steps, it sounds complex and you would get dizzy in no time if you make it one by one. Because actually, those steps goes only to the facing position. It doesn't look like stepping because it move the same time with body. To turn it into steps, you just need to adjust the timing. Any adjusting on the basic pose would usually be needed but it would be easier to do it later.
So, make her steps only by moving, copying [and eliminating if needed] the keyframes on the time bar. Here you can start to adjust the foot position for her convenience, make her turns back smoothly, and less like a drunken person with those ugly feet movements.

After feet look nice, go for the hip. Basically just make the pelvis move to counters the weight of her body when stepping. One basic concept: Hip goes to create weight that pulls the foot of the ground, so it moves first. And because foot is lighter, it lands faster than pelvis - which now moves later, creating the save landing for body [and pelvis] and prevents them from falling on the ground.

Now the stepping is done and look nice, you can start to put some delay and secondary motion on body, head and arms. Which one will start turning? Head or shoulder? That's of course depends on the case. (arm will move last, except she wants to punch or hit something).

Very-Much-Wanted compositing

I found it among trashes of my old abandoned blog. Guess I'm gonna sharing it here with you, guys.
This is the character model. It's still look too clean for the scene. Since it's for still image, I plan to make it dirtier on the compositing. This way is easier and often gives more expectable result.

Rendering:

As you can see it's still look empty and dull. There is only one ambient light, that's why i tried to put another element like wanted poster and a blue light from the opposite direction. I'm quite satisfied with that. I'll try to make it richer in photoshop.

Don't forget for zdepth render. It's very usefull for very light and machine friendly depth of field making:

At first, the explosion look like that. But after a lot of input it looks not real enough, make sense. So I tried to put more dirt and change the blast type of explosion into a real explosion. I also make the clothes dirtier and add some blood sprays on her body for more dramatic atmosphere.

On February 2011 I'd been on one month contract project in Malaysia. The office located in Syah Alam, Half and hour driving from Kuala Lumpur. I was working on a project for Digilogic - Tulus Fikir malaysian company. Never ask for my job preview on the project, that's again the rule. Lol.
Though the schedule is pretty tight. But it's still fun and full of experience. The people especially the boss and seniors is surprisingly fun, giving good atmosphere to the whole workplace. The most drawback is the adaptation with the food, weather, and work system. I got sick and so is my friend. But fortunately the project still could be completed in that one month so that's not really a problem.
For now I'm on one ambitious project in Indonesia. I even got proposed to be a teacher in the university I'm working to. But I guess it's not the right time for me to get settled, maybe another time. For now I want to wander around gathering experience -and money, haha- from around the world -hopefully. If everything's running fine, me, my friend, and probably with some other friends, would come back to Malaysia soon. Wish us luck.

It's Time For a Comeback.

Whew, it's been like forever. More than a month I didn't write here.
Well.. Lots of things happened. I was on a project in Malaysia for a month, pretty busy and I got sick too, and lately when I got home, internet sucks and dead completely just 2 days ago.
But I just stop using the old provider and got the new one last night and I can say that.. It's ton much better!
So here I am, hoping that I could start writing something again A.S.A.P. If I am still busy right now, at least tomorrow is already weekend and I got one new action figure I didn't uploaded. Yay!

2011 for me is the start of change. I'm going to make a great movement in my life. This is the time -while I still have it- to take the risk and jump for a new experience, new point of view, and better life.
I just got great news right on the last day of 2010, We'll see if everything's going well as planned. I can't wait to share it with everyone. Maybe some of them would believe it's too radical and sudden, but actually I've already make some hints last year. Ready or not the time has come.

For this photo session, a tripod allows me to use ISO 100 in a low light room in the midnight and still delivering a crisp, bright, and noiseless pictures, oh how I love this new tool..

I use timer to minimize shakey taking, therefore low shutter speed is not a problem anymore since I didn't need to touch the camera while it works taking the picture. By using room's neon low lighting and a candle for a yellow cast, the color is pretty rich. Combine it with Photoshop's curve adjustment, we get a classic color mating. Indigo + Gamboge.

Sometimes I play with low shutter speed and move the candle light for pretty effect. Camera tends to catch object with more light -in this case a candle's fire- easier than the one without. I try to move my hands in front of camera in a very low sutter speed, but I only got distinct blur. But when I subtitute it with candle light, here's what I've got.

Punyu Wallpapers

Spending time on weekend to make another Punyu's piccy. Actually I was trying to make a wallpaper for my Blackberry XD. Posing-Lighting-Rendering-Compositing.

The compositing elements. It is better to break the element like this then compose it on Photoshop or After Effect than to deliver all the works into the renderer because we would have more control on the final composition. Computer are worker, not creator. The creativity should be kept controlled by the man's hands.

The wallpaper version, 360x480 pixels. I needs to readjust position of character and text so it suits My 9530 layout

Choosing between Omnia i900 and Blackberry Storm 9530

That morning I woke up my Samsung Star S5233 cellphone's touchscreen suddenly inactive, totally. Sure the screen looked okay, normal, the keypad too, but it didn't respond any touch! I couldn't send or open message, open phonebook, etc. I could only call the last number that had calling me. A fully touchscreen phone that can't be touch? Hmmmm.. I bought it on the August 2009, so the warranty has been expired, ouch.
Then I guessed I need to get a new cellphone. So I did a little riset to find a new phone that suits me, the thing itself and [of course] the price. After long one day of browsing, reading, comparing. I had narrowing the selection into two: Samsung Omnia i900 and RIM Blackberry Storm 9530.

Why Omnia?

I've been accustomed to touchscreen and Samsung. Omnia would give the feel like the upgrade of my good ol' Star. It has all what Star has plus alot of better things. Much more better processor, better technology, and my favorit OS: Windows Mobile. And personaly I really love the look. The only BIG drawback is it's an old released phone. It has been discontinued so I wouldn't find the new item on the market, only the used one.

Why Storm?

RIM Blackberry Storm 9530

Blackberry has been a new phenomenon in Indonesia. Alot of people use it because of it's easy and user friendly internet service such as facebook, email, twitter etc. But I was holding back into getting it because of personal reason. I don't like Blackberry's keypad form, not style. It's more into it's physical look, I just don't like it. That was untill I found about Storm, a touchscreen version of Blackberry. Therefore, my personal Balckberry problem's solved.

So I decided to get Blackberry.

UPDATE:

Good news. I win the first place. Unlike the previous challenge which I always got highest vote but various liking from the jurors, this time they like my animation the most. That's a good progress. The other contestants also have pretty good animations. What a fun and experienceful challenge!

Design of Punyu's sword, Omega.

In the end I remove the blue part of the sword, only because I need sword that looked light and fast. Punyu is a small girl with small figure, she is better to be an agile and nimble character rather than a heavy armed brutish orcish like.
I make her walkcycle to be a sneaky walk.

attack WIP, half combos, I think it needs a little more exaggeration. Too realistic is not interesting at all, guess I'll push it into hyper realistic

After judging the challanges for couple time.. I can see a lot of improvement on hiffary's work... I think this is one of the best work that he's done so far.
There isn't really much to critiques on this one.. the movement style fit the character.
If i am being really nit picky ... on the walk.. the head feels a little stiff and there is some jittery on the movement ( around frame 60-ish) and it looks like there's bit of a pop on the head also . The run feels good! right now it's really anime style of running.. but if you have to make it realistic.. the body needs to go up and down a little bit more .. and also the upper body doesn't really move right now.
The attack feels good..
the get hit ... the beginning part feels a little choppy ..
overall .. good job!

The sneak walk is fine,but put it as a reminder that its much better to have it not cycled if you are entering a contest, intead used walking with an attitude in every step would make a difference.( e.g., on second or third step, lower the body, lift the arm a bit, have her squint, blink, apply more follow through on secondary action like hair etc.)

The same as in run as well...too much of a cycle and lacks some secondary actions such as follow through on hair and cloth on pants.

The fight scene is wonderful with a heart-melting acting and drama though still follow through is missing.

The material on the head is confusing as to whether it is a helmet or a hair. It moves like a steel and seemingly appears like a hair or a kind of soft elements. My experienced in designing on feature films suggest that she has no armour,-perhaps on the hand. So, I supposed its a hair and should move as a soft material.

That out-balanced on the fight scene,--it was nice. I would buy it.
All is perfect except for a bit of tweak on walk, run and follow through.

pemahaman dan penerapan secondary motionnya sangat baik. jika walk fokus di kaki, maka gerakan tangan hanya mengikuti pergerakan kaki tersebut. trus selagi attack tangan kanan, tangan kiri mengimbangi gerakan animasinya. balance juga sudah cukup baik. mungkin bisa dilihat lagi tiap frame ato posenya, dimana pelvis dan berat tubuh karakter terfokus, dan bagaimana bentuk pose bahu dan tangan mengimbangi balance fokus berat tersebut. anticipation animationnya mungkin bisa dijadiin reference buat yg lain...

secara in game, attacknya masih terlihat terlalu rumit. terlalu bnyk perpindahan koordinat. jika ini game rpg yg 'in group/in party' karakter, attack itu mungkin bisa 'nabrak' karakter2 lain yg ada di sebelahnya (jika engine gamenya punya physique engine yg bagus, tentu tidak jd masalah). hit, timing kena attacknya mungkin masih bersinergi dengan hitnya. tp bagian akhir terlalu panjang. mungkin itu bisa jadi satu animasi sendiri, yaitu animasi 'die' (beberapa ingame punya animasi ini, karena tidak setiap attack lawannya lgsg mati). tapi disamping itu semua, animasinya oke, jd masukan diatas bisa diterapkan untuk animasi ingame lagi di kemudian hari. best luck!

Low Polygon Modeling

Before I start posting my works I'm gonna write this as I think alot when my friends and colleagues asking about how much is the limit of polygon amounts they have if they want to make low polygon model.
It never hurts to start modeling on low polygon. It is light, efficient and much more practical. It is very crucial in real time rendering such in games and simulations. But eventhough it usually doesn't have noticable impact on rendering animation movie, low polygon model helps alot on the production and animation phase.
Even so, with the fast growing technology, the concept of low polygon also shifted. Since the machine is gotten stronger, its ability to render polygon in real time is also increasing. This day, next generation games could render models with polygons in the same or even more amounts than earlier post rendered movies. Some amounts that had been known as the boundary of the number of polygons needed to create a low polygon models now has been passed. Now for game making purpose we could create model with the same amount of polygons just as the models for the movie, though the game couldn't use mesh smoothing add-on yet just like the movie could do. But that is the big YET since the boundary's just getting even more narrow than ever this day, particulary with the incoming technology of Microsoft DirectX® 11's tesselation.
But that is not the end of low polygon modeling. It's not that personally I think it has its own charm. But apart from that, low polygon concept is still alive, not by the number of the polygon boundary but by artist pretension to pursue efficiency. Doesn't have limit doesn't mean you can do everything you want. The good modeler wont abuse the limit. Even the strongest machine has limit and more efficient we use it, life would be easier for both of the human and the machine.
If there's no need for some polygon, edge, or vertex to be there, like it's on the flat planar surface, or the computer could discover by itself on the mesh smoothing, then there is no reason for it to be there.

You doesn't have to do it in low polygon. But do it in the lowest polygons you could.

Enough babbling, that's just me.

It was a short movie project but it turns out unfinished due to the other projects, so I made this as an archive for my low polygon modeling, rendering, and animation. Next render of the wolfman and the environment will be coming soon.

Punyu, My Soda Girl [Updated Progress]

UPDATE:

Thinks the earlier hair is stylish but pretty weird, Punyu kept asking me for the new one. She is very stubborn, never give up on asking and now she got it. Here it is, a new stylish but less weird hairstyle with some Indonesian touch.

(Let me introduce you to a new member of the family. Punyu. Don't ask how I got the name, it just came like that. I uploaded the design of this character on the previous post, though I still change some elements here after in 3D, i.e. hair and hat. We can call the mesh's done here, next step would be texturing and then rigging-skinning. Can't wait to animate her.

Reason why I create her? Well, it doesn't mean I was distracted from my reel project. My reel is near complete, but if we take an analogy it would be as complete as lemonade, and people who's gonna take my drink doesn't like lemonade for a drink. They want something else that is more refreshing, but not that far from lemonade kind. So I decide to make lemon squash. And to turn lemonade into a squash we need soda! That is, my soda girl, Punyu.

It needs 2 nights to did the model, and 1 more night for rigging and skinning. Yep, I try not to waste any time. There's some part of the skinning that still needs some fixing on the shoulder. Wont be long, but I need to sleep now.

The original wireframe. As u can see I am sticking in my low polygon modelling style. I love it because it is easier and lighter to rig and animate. With the character who is animate-friendly, I can push my animation effectively to my limit.

Unsmoothed original mesh. Somehow it always has a charm rather than smoothed mesh, maybe because I am more specialized in low polygon modelling.

The turbo smoothed mesh. Eventhough I love the unsmoothed one, I still gonna use this for final presentation because it would look more polished and is more cinema friendly.

Textured one. WIP. I changed Punyu hair into more stylish design and removed the hat because rather than make her cute, it made her looked like a hobo.

Done with texture and shader, then testing it on the lighted scene.

Good news, Mount Merapi is getting calm. It still on awas(Highest Rank) status, but the eruption has been fewer and smaller, good grieve. Everything's starting to come back to normal. I can back to work and also create some free project like this one.

As you already knew I live in Indonesia, Javanese Island, Jogjakarta City.
There's an active volcano in the uptown of my city that is Mount Merapi. It had erupt on October 26th ago, and still erupting untill now.
Now I'm evacuating to my parents house that live further than my house, just in case, while waiting untill the volcano calms again. I don't know if I still could write anything artsy in this blog while this is still happenning. All my mind and my heart is concentrated into Merapi, the victims, and the people of Jogjakarta. The lovely, simple and friendly people of the city I love, now is in distress. Hope it would all be over soon. Be strong everyone, God helps us.

Pray for Indonesia.

The eruption brings volcanic dust everywhere around Mount Merapi. It's dangerous for human health so a gas mask is a must. While lot of people use thick and light mask, I prefer the big one. Maybe they say it look dumb, but for me.. This is steam punk, dude!

So Little Time, So Much I Want To Do

Make you wish one day consists of more than 24 hours, eh.

I have so many things, so many plans, but all of them needs time, one I can't control and felt so lacky even I've already slept for only 5 hours a day [Hell, I can't do less than that or I'd loose weight again, and that would not be quiet healthy]. And I also realized, the eager to do many things also prevent me to be game maniac like before. I only play game when It's leisure time, I had nothing important to do, or the game is really really interesting [which I can say not many since I've lost interest in game pretty much]

That's one reason I'm not updating this blog as much as before, but I can promise you that is because I'm always doing on somethings. One the things are done I'll put them here. For now I'm busy on finishing the animation for IndoCG Challenge. I have plan to make clay, hope I can start that once the challenge is done [and thank's God I'm on rendering phase right now]. I can also mention I miss painting, but the lack of pen tablet help me to endure that, lol.

One thing I learnt for success in finishing lot of projects is never do another if one was not done yet. I know it's hard to ignore something more interesting that keep coming while we're still working on the old project that starts to feel kinda boring, but in the end you'll surprised by the pile of results that is more than rather keep changing on different kind of projects.

One acomplished result is better than a bunch of half-done works. Focus! Always one thing at a time.

It has been a long time I didn't have a chance to took picture of cosplayers since the last time in Vredeburg. Last week on a cosplay event at SMA 7 I was in Jakarta. So when I heard about this event I was surely planning to be there, packed with my photography gears.

Hunting on a Mall was a challenge! It's a crowd area, you need to adapt with the distances, spaces, people activites, and indoor light condition. I remember changing the lens all the time to get best results and I didn't want to make the cosplayers to wait so I've got to did it fast. Tight close up is easier to get with 50mm fix lenses. It gives nice bokeh and lot of lights for it 1/1.8 apperture. But its tight focal length could be an action killer for shot that need full body shot and dramatic wide angle, that was when I decide to change into my 15-55mm kit lense. I also need to push ISO setting into 1600 (!) because I knew I will need to move alot, and got distraction alot. I think some noise is more tolerable than having blurry and unfocused pictures.
But overall, this was a great opportunity and learning, I crave for another photographic experiences like this.

My photography philosophy is both photographer and the model has the right to own the piccies, so here they are the high resolution version to grab, just click on the thumbnails, it linked to photobucket hosting directly. The resolution is 1074x1600 pixels, enough for a print or anythings.

Gundam Again and World of Warcraft

I already got the toy couple weeks ago actually, but I didn't have the time for the photo session. Just took it this morning, my first 1/100 scale Gundam, ZGMF-X42S DESTINY.

Now this one is kinda new, as my possession to be more precisely. Because this was a loose pack, second hand, and in unperfect condition. No base stand nor weapons. That's why I got it in a really cheap price, less than a half of how much it has to be.
I need to retouch it a little like put it on hot water to straighten the wings, stick the loose head, and cut a drawing board for the base, but that was where I enjoy it. I'm not a perfect collector I can say that, but at least I got new nice model for a photo session. Nice!

Kuda lumping / jaran kepang / jathilan: a traditional Javanese dance featuring a group of soldiers on a horse This dance is using a horse made of wicker and bamboo that cut like a horse. This horse matting decorated with colorful paint and fabric. Jathilan is usually only shows the saber scene, but some performances will also serve lumping horse possessed attractions, immunity, and magical powers, such as the attraction of eating glass and immunity against flogging whip. Jathilan is part of the reog dance performances. Though this dance came from Java, Indonesia, this dance is also inherited by the Javanese settled in Malaysia and Singapore.Jathilan is an art that is played with a horse property imitation, made from woven bamboo. There was a people party in Kayen Village, the place where studiokasatmata studios presents. There gonna be a Jathilan. Since I didn't have so much to do on this weekend, I pack my gear and came to studio on Sunday ..and I'm not dissapointed I did. Rain didn't mean a pulldown, though I need to be more careful in protecting my camera, but it made the Jathilan trance even more dramatic!

The holidays had just pass. It is time for me to get back into my reel project, and this time.. crunch time.
One more punyu walkcycle and the reel is as good as a hot baked cake. But it's not easy since I got to manage time between this personal project, work, life, play and rest.
The best thing to get through with that is a brand new spirit. There I change the look of my site, Not a big changes but more like putting small and nice add ons.
The main theme obviously been changed and you' ll notice that I had add new portofolio banners. It is cool! But.. the contents are still under construction. Won't be long, coming soon, just be patient.

Acting Animation - Not As Simple As..

This should be the last acting clip for my 2010 reel. Then after I'm done with punyu walk/runcycle, the reel would be considerly done.

The workflow:

A friend asks me to make the clip less shakey for an analyzing purpose. I already like the handycam version, so rather than change the final result, I'll upload the steady version, the one without camera animation in order you to see the animation clearly. Hope it could help.

Jalan Jalan - Lotus [Dragon Hunters OST]

I rewatched Dragon Hunter [Chasseurs De Dragons] when I refound this music. What a superb mucic, and more, it uses a very familiar Indonesian instrument. Kinda sounds like Javanese/Balinese music that arranged into some masterpiece with Hans Zimmer quality. Curiously I googled it and found that The song's title is Lotus, performed by Jalan Jalan[!] and the album name is: Bali[!]. Do you think that's surprising enough? Well.. that's not the biggest twist. Jalan Jalan is not an Indonesian music band, orchestra, or something, but it is actually a Japanese! here's more about Jalan Jalan Bali CD:

Proud and shame comes to me massively..
Proud because our country has a beautiful music potential that charms and inspires peoples from other country, and shame because other country appreciates and values our tradition more then ourself. I didn't yet found our musicians has arrange our traditional music into masterpiece like this. Apart from it, it is a beautiful music indeed. I'm in love to it maybe I'm gonna use it as background music for my animation reel.

How I Met My Internet Customer Service

It has been 5 days that the internet in my home is dead!
What a pain. I can't live this way, unbearable, I am dying, need to.. Go to provider shop and make them revive it again! 3 sessions of "How I Met Your Mother" helped me alot bearing through that ..and kept me from making any progress in my animation exercise o_o;;
Thanks God it does connected now, after a long debate with the shop customer service.
Now everything is back to normal, I can continue my animation now, but wait.. Made brings me session 4 of "How I Met Your Mother", nooooooooo.....!!

Punyu - Walks

Casual Walks

I always used template, note, or reference drawing to make walkycle. True, that solved the problem but it lacks some principles of understanding motion.
So I relearn it. 2 chapter of Richard Williams' Animator Survival Kit helps me alot. By knowing how and why we walk now I don't need note anymore. It's all about understanding.
If you feel like you were missing something in animation eventhough you already a professional in it, don't hesitate to goes way back for basical things. You'd be surprised by what you would find. It's just like what Richard Williams said, "You don't know what you don't know."
I need to watch the next chapter to make Punyu runs, so before that, here she is in casual walking in 12's. In the end it was become my 1st frame by frame animation. I think It's much better than the walkcycle without understanding of the basic which I ever made.

Sneaks

Wow, this is a little harder than the casual walk. Maybe it's because I am trying to make it more dinamic, not just a cycle, but more into a scene where she sneaks backward, turns her body, then sneaks forward.
Animator Survival Kits is still my holy guide on this one. Here is the first blocking.

It was 11.00 PM, raining, and I was alone at my house. I was doing walkcycle for Punyu when the electricity was suddenly out.
It is a third world country, electricity is out often. Yeah, that's suck. I couldn't sleep that early, my PSP battery was almost out and I got bored by games lately anyway. So I picked my camera, thanks God it still has lot of power, looked like I just full recharging it some times ago, and got creative with the lights shortage, wich was one pair of candles.

Kitchen Afternoon in Progress

I move this tutorial from my old blog here because one of my friend asks for it.
This isthe step by step (really detail steps) of my "kitchen afternoon" artworks. the softwares I used is painter and a little photoshop for retouching. the hardware is wacom bamboo tablet. I forgot to count the time, but it was approx. 4-5 hours including the sketch. click the thumbnail for bigger images.

sketch and ink are done in traditional technic. I will retrace the lineart with digital pen later for more smooth lines. ok, start to coloring. for the tone, lately I prefer to pick from real photo, since it give more realistic and predictable color combination. predictable means I looks for photo reference who had the tones and atmosphere that I need, then start to pick the color from it. so im like have plan how the pic gonna be, not totally random like what I had always did in earlier artworks. the photograph also gaves me the idea to added the sunlight effect that falls thru windows to the body.

like usual, my paint technique is just blocking then blending the colour. ill try other technic when im bored with this one :D. for now, this technic gives me the best result that I want. oh, and I even pick the environment color from the photograph.

well, not all tones had been pick from photograph. i also added my own green tone to make the color richer, also to make the dark area more darker.

I achieve the whole atmospher tone in bottom right pic by retouching in photoshop and thats it. It's done!

Lit The Kitchen

A friends asked me how I lit the kitchen in the soundsync animation scene. So here's I'll share it with you. It's not a tutorial, I am not a technic expert. It use only a simple technique, the rest is about sense and watching a lot of movies.
I use vray renderer for this scene, It has simple and easy to use global illumination setting. Here's the scene's lighting position.

Another tips to enchance the visual is using the SSS Shader for the skin

Okay, you've technically done with the scene light set. Now for the render phase, it's a choice, but i suggest you to split the still background and the moving object (character and props) apart.

Since the background is not moving towards camera, you practically only need one frame to be rendered. For the real time rendering you only need to render the moving object and hide the still background with vray matte feature. Don't just use the hide object thingy or you'll missed the colour bouncing from object to the background vice versa, shadow, and would be a big problem if the still object is in front of the moving object.

for 270 frames it needs about 3 hours long total rendering on my phenom PC.

No matter how peaceful you are, how safe the step you take, you can't live without conflict. Why? Because each person is pursuing their wants. It is impossible to make everyone happy, except you don't live for yourself. It is your way or their way, it is a hard decission.
If I could live more than once, then I'll try to make everyone happy, I'll live for them and get my dreams on the next other life. But I got to be realistic, and in this one short life, eventhough I never sure if I could reach the biggest dream, at least I'm gonna try to reach it.
I don't want to be hated deserter soldier, but again that is never my choice. Whatever will be, will be.

Sound Synchronization Animation [updated] Wins 1st Place!

ICG Animation Challenge number 3 is about sound sync. There is particular audio clip with sound effects that we need to make animation, any kind of activities which is synchronized to the audio.
Personally I prefer to do some acting animation, since I didn't have any personal animation about that yet. I even had PM the admin, but it look like they had different decission. Then I thought I would still tried to finish the animation, since it never a waste to have another seriously made animation. I would do the acting animation later by myself after I done with this.
Well, it's done now.
And before i get myself into the next animation, I ll share the sound sync video here first. It is on Vimeo video sharing site. Although it is heavier than youtube but you can play it frame by frame, also it's the competition rule.

Let's hope it wins something.

I really like this piece.. I would choose it as the winner, BUT it doesn't sync with the audio. Unfortunately since it doesn't complete the challenged, I can't give the highest score.
I think the idea is great. the ball with the tail is awesome . It gets a little to complicated when he tried to hit the ball . But with some more work and put more weight on the swing , i think it would work . Similar thing with the hit to the table. The movement needs more weight. It has to hit the table harder and then he needs some recovery time to absord the impact.
But overall idea is there. Just need some polish

Story idea nya bagus & menarik... tapi ada bbrp hal minor yg bisa diperbaiki utk membuat animationnya lbh baik:
- Di frame 000, ati2 dgn pose wrist tangan kanan si chef. Terlalu patah & tidak natural. Hal yg sama terjadi bbrp kali, misalnya di frame 178-184.
- Juga ati2 dgn penetration: frame 179-180 (tangan kanan nembus ke meja), 185 (nembus ke topi), 191-195 (nembus meja lagi), 211 (ujung stick nembus ke box).
- Di pose terakhir (pingsan di lantai) si chef badannya floating... pastikan nempel di lantai.
- wkt binatangnya ngegigit tangan si chef, silhouette nya terlalu overlapping (binatang dgn tangan) sehingga kurang keliatan jelas kalo dia ngegigit tangan si chef... akan lebih bagus kalo awalnya ada jarak dl antara binatang dgn tangan chef, lalu kasih liat thought process si binatang sampe kemudian dia memutuskan utk mengigit tangan si chef... Aku liat hifarry udah buat hal itu, cuma aja krn dari awal shot si binatang ekornya gerak2 terus, ga keliatan jelas emosi nya.. apakah dia takut, ga sadar kl dia dlm bahaya, happy, atau apa? Krn ga ada muka, lengan & kaki, satu2nya cara utk mengconvey feeling & emotion dia adalah lewat body movement (badan & ekor)... & harus ada perubahan emotion (supaya keliatan jalan pikirannya). Misalnya aja, wkt pertama, dia ketakutan krn mau dibunuh & dia gemeteran... lalu wkt si chef lepas pegangannya, si binatang sadar lalu melihat ada kesempatan utk self defense, liat ke chef lalu liat ke tangan chef.. antic... lalu menerkam tangan si chef.
- Ati2 jg dgn kaki... krn gerakan badan, kaki jadi ketarik2 & jadi banyak jinjit2. Jadi terkesan kyk kakinya stuck nempel di lantai & badan gerak2 sendiri, instead of weight dari badan ditopang oleh kaki.
But overall it's a good piece & fun to watch. Good work!

The idea is Cool. The humor is also amazing. It just needs some kind of a substance as an ingredients for an outrageous animation,--more push on the action will work.
The character has to show the clarity of action before lifting the knife,he has to lift the knife, have the audience read it before lifting it up...--a clear way to communicate to the viewer. Also, a basic requirement in animation.
But, it has a style of its own,--apart from what we used to see. Wonderful touched of humor though. This one is unique thats why I choose this one as first.
To sum it up; the style itself is a winner.

the challenge is actually how to deliver information to the audience as clear as you can, and using time wisely so everything is clean and simple.

Basic Animations

Almost 2 years ago, with Bayu Sulistyo as a mentor, I was resetting my animation learning and back into basic. Using Animation Mentor curiculum as a guide I started to learn bouncing balls, balls with tail, et cetera animations and and it gave me a precise and conceptual understanding about curve and timing.
I dig my harddrive for the files then re-render and compose it into one clip because I know this could be useful as a part of my animation reel later.

Call Me Stupid - Acting Animation

Okay, it's time to get in deep with acting area. If we never start we never move forward.
But let's starting with the short one though. I got the sound clip from 11 second club animation forum and I need around 4 days apart from work hours to finish this clip. Thank's to my colleague Made Dimas Wirawan for the idea about story and the setting, which made this short video to be more make sense, and even funnier. Lol.

The Best Motivator is Yourself

Lots of people blogging because they want it to be read and commented. They are asking for friends, collegas, families, and everyone else to be commenting to their posts. They would be sad if their blog was quiet and didn't has alot of visitors. In the end, they doesn't have enough motivation to write the new post, being lazy, and give up on the blog.

Lots of people shows their works, their arts, their sweats to other people so it could be enjoyed, admired, commented or even criticized. Being responded sure as hell is exciting. They felt exist. What a damn big motivation.

But when that happened is the contrary, then so does the motivation and spirit. In the end, they didn't even have enough motivation to make another piece, being lazy, and give up on the work. Now the work they did is not fun anymore, It's only a job. Job, is not part of the fun.

I was like that sometimes ago, and it led me into a big giant lazyness and demotivation.

But now i realize, being exist is not about how you have been known by other people. No, people not always objective. Let say u scores 90 and their friend scores 85, they're gonna see, unconciously, that their friend is better than you.

Being exist is more about you've been known by yourself. It is you, YOU, the most important and only person needs to know that you are there, alive, and kicking. That is the best motivation. Blog because you like to record your steps, not because you want to be commented. Animate because you're enjoying each step you make to play God, breathing life into a soulless 3D doll, happy to see it move and act as your creation.
Then, you don't need a free time to do some free time job, since it's enjoyable more than TVs, movies, and games, you would move aside some playtime and fill it with blogging and personal project.
After some times had pass, you ll realize that you've already post lots on your blog, then people will start visiting. You ll realize that you produce lots of decent animations, that you ready to make a reel.

You do it because you love it. It is fun, it is playing, we have 8 hours each day in life to play and that's enough to make alot of posts or an amazing personal jobs. Didn't count if you sleep less than 8 hours.

At least that works for me. In the last 3 months my reel almost ready and in the last week I write this much on my blog.

Jumping For The Ball

It's an animation that I have done when sometimes ago I was resetting my animation learning into basic steps. This was the part when we need to make the character jump on the pole. Here I combined it with the ball animation. It was actually three alternatives that I must chose which one is the best. But later I included them into one clip, one story about three attempts that the character made to reach the ball. Everytime he failed, the camera rolled back and he tried again. Did he made it? Check it by yourself.

Cosplayers Invading The Fort

It was Sunday morning at the Fort Vredeburg Yogyakarta, I had a session with my fellow cosplayers. Vredeburg was an old colonial fort which turned into a public museum. Having a photo session on a crowded facility is needing alot of patience, especially when the models you took is a cosplay. Many times we needed to wait just for a people to get through the scene area, or even couple of times they asked to took pictures together with the cosplayers, that was another waits. But I guess that's what the fun about it. I did alot of shots, around 370, and among of them I found some pieces that I really like. Here they are..

Cosplay at Kimochi Fest Yogyakarta 2010

This was the first time I was taking pictures of cosplayers, and what I can say about them is, they were totally camera friendly. They didn't mind u take pictures, really appreciated it instead, and they knew how to pose. As a photographer I am kinda questioning, according to many cosplay pictures I saw on the internet, they rarely had a session with a good photographer. Of course they are some but that is only a few. It's like photographers and cosplayers are each totally people from different planet.
To all my good fellow photographers, they aren't. They are living with us and they are as good as many of our photography models. Let's not put their appealing look and hard work into a waste.
I tag all the cosplayers on facebook and give them the high resolution photos if they want it. I love being friend with these attractive otakus and guess what, we have plan for another photosession.

Prince of Persia 2008 vs Prince of Persia The Forgotten Sands

I know I am a minority, but i love the PoP 2008. I won't discredit the other series and the fans because I didn't want to be a fanboy. It is actually has a pretty nice story with twist and turns in the middle and ending, not straight forward like PoP TFS. I also more attached to PoP 2008's characters. I think they are more lovable, but that's personal. The cell-shading visual concept also somewhat refreshing and eye candy, but I gotta admit, the casual concept of this game is too much and got into super-casual since u cant die.
Eventhough I like the way how Ubisoft tries to put new ideas into this series, but their decission to steps back and reincarnates the original Prince of Persia style had gotten my appreciation, that is, they puts majority fans on their top priority and that is a right thing to do.
Unfortunately, I am a minority one.
So i guess the mistake for PoP 2008 is.. it has PoP title. You and lot of people who love the serious-pure hearted-and-act more like a prince-kind of prince have right to be dissapointed with this episode, maybe i just some fans who got bored and needs another kind of game. Yes, i wish they had release PoP 2008 on a different title, according to the main character, Thief of Persia would suit it more, and then I'd surely play this game more than original PoP. :)

you prefer straightforward story as long it is about the prince, naive main character as long it use the prince's outfit, not-so-appealing female character, than this.. and you do mind if i call you a fanboy?
